There is simply no denying the legendary place Dolly Parton holds in country music—and in the hearts of so many fans. Chances are, you can sing along to at least one of her iconic songs without missing a beat, and devoted fans know her movie roles just as well. (Bonus points if her Christmas movies are part of your holiday rotation!) Following the news of Dolly’s death at age 80 on August 25, 2026, we’re looking back at the remarkable life behind the music, movies, big hair, and even bigger heart.

Dolly’s story began far from the spotlight. The country legend grew up in rural Tennessee as one of 12 children before landing a spot on The Porter Wagoner Show in 1967, a break that helped launch her into superstardom. From there came songs like “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You,” unforgettable turns in 9 to 5 and Steel Magnolias, and a career that stretched across music, television, film, Broadway, business, and philanthropy. Over the years, she earned nominations from all four major American entertainment awards—the Emmys, Grammys, Oscars, and Tonys—a distinction that says plenty about just how many worlds Dolly managed to conquer.

And yet, for all those accomplishments, Dolly had a wonderfully simple way of describing what she hoped to achieve: “My dream was to make as many people happy as I could in this life.” She did exactly that. Whether she was sharing funny marriage wisdom from her decades with her late husband Carl Dean, writing a song that somehow said exactly what you needed to hear, or making an entire room laugh with one perfectly timed Dollyism, she left everything she touched a little brighter.

So in celebration of Dolly’s extraordinary life, take a look back at the photos that tell the story—from her Tennessee childhood to the rhinestones, red carpets, and unforgettable career that followed.
