There’s just something about a strawberry margarita that feels like summertime. I love making these when we’re grilling, hosting friends, or just sitting on the porch after a long day. Instead of using bottled margarita mix, I blend up fresh strawberries with lime juice and sugar to create a homemade strawberry puree that’s bright, sweet, and full of flavor.
I mix the puree with silver tequila and a splash of triple sec for a margarita that’s fruity, refreshing, and dangerously easy to sip! But my favorite part might be the strawberry-salt rim. I crush freeze-dried strawberries and mix them with kosher salt to make the prettiest pink rim for each glass. It adds the perfect sweet-and-salty finish and makes these cocktails feel extra special.
Serve them with some homemade guacamole, pico de gallo, and shrimp tacos, and you'll be ready to party! The best part is that you can make the margarita mixture ahead of time and keep it chilled until everyone’s ready for a drink. Just pour it over ice, add a lime wedge, and enjoy. Trust me—once you try these homemade strawberry margaritas, you’ll want to make them all season long!
Can you make these strawberry margaritas ahead of time?
Yes! The strawberry margarita mixture can be made several hours ahead and refrigerated until ready to serve. Just give it a quick stir before pouring it over ice.
What tequila is best for strawberry margaritas?
Silver tequila (also called blanco tequila) works best in this recipe because it has a clean, crisp flavor that pairs perfectly with fresh strawberries and lime juice.
Do you have to strain the strawberry puree?
Straining the puree creates a smoother margarita texture, but you can skip this step if you prefer a thicker, more rustic cocktail.

Ingredients
- 1 qt. strawberries, hulled and quartered (about 4 cups)
- 1/2 cup sugar
- Juice of 3 limes, plus lime wedges for garnish
- 2 cups silver tequila
- 1/2 cup triple sec
- 1 cup freeze-dried strawberries
- 1/4 cup kosher salt
Directions
- Step 1Puree the fresh strawberries, sugar, and lime juice in a blender until smooth, 2 to 3 minutes. Strain through a fine-mesh sieve into a large measuring cup or pitcher. Stir in the tequila and triple sec and refrigerate until ready to serve.
- Step 2Just before serving, crush the freeze-dried strawberries in a resealable plastic bag using a rolling pin or heavy skillet. Mix the crushed strawberries with the salt in a small bowl and pour onto a shallow plate. Use a lime wedge to wet the rim of a glass, then dip the rim in the strawberry salt. Fill the glass with ice and pour in the margarita. Garnish with a lime wedge. Repeat to make more margaritas.
