This Shamrock Sour Martini is a bright, festive way to raise a glass on St. Patrick’s Day. Its signature green hue comes from melon liqueur, which brings a sweet, fruity note that pairs perfectly with crisp vodka and fresh lime juice. A splash of simple syrup softens the tartness, and a touch of sparkling water adds just enough fizz for a balanced, refreshing sip.

The finishing details are what make this drink celebration-worthy. Gold sanding sugar gives the rim a subtle shimmer, while a honeydew garnish shaped like a shamrock adds a playful nod to the holiday. You can make the garnish with a small heart- or clover-shaped cookie cutter, but melon balls or hand-cut shapes work just as well—no specialty tools required to enjoy this cocktail!

If you’re looking for more St. Patrick’s Day cocktails, then give this Irish Mule, Mint-Chocolate Grasshopper Cocktail, or Appletini a try.

What are other uses for leftover simple syrup?

Simple syrup is a staple in many cocktails (such as a Tom Collins or Lemon Drop), but it’s also useful beyond the bar cart. Stir it into iced coffee or iced tea for smooth, even sweetness, or brush it over cake layers to help keep them moist.

Can a shamrock sour martini be made ahead of time?

The cocktail is best shaken and served fresh, but the honeydew garnish can be assembled up to 6 hours in advance and refrigerated in an airtight container lined with a damp paper towel. The glasses can also be rimmed up to 30 minutes before serving.

What can you use instead of gold sanding sugar?

Regular granulated sugar works just fine for rimming the cocktail glass. For extra sparkle, coarse decorating sugar or even green sanding sugar are fun options.

What if you don't have a cookie cutter to make the shamrock garnish?

No problem. Use a melon baller for simple rounds, or cut out small shapes with a paring knife. The garnish will still look charming and festive.

Ingredients

For the Simple Syrup:

  • 1 cup sugar

For the Cocktail:

  • 2 Tbsp. gold sanding sugar
  • 2 oz. fresh lime juice, plus a lime wedge for rimming
  • 3 oz. honeydew melon, for garnish
  • 4 oz. green melon liqueur (such as Midori)
  • 2 oz. vodka
  • Seltzer or club soda, for topping

Directions

  • For the simple syrup: In a small saucepan over medium heat, whisk together the sugar and 1 cup water. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the sugar is completely dissolved (the syrup should be clear, not cloudy), 2 to 3 minutes. Remove from the heat and transfer to a heatproof container. Let cool completely, about 1 hour on the counter or 30 minutes in the refrigerator. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator until ready to use.

For the cocktail: Place the gold sanding sugar in a shallow dish. Run the lime wedge around the rims of 2 coupe or martini glasses, then dip the rims into the sanding sugar, turning to coat; chill until ready to serve.

To make the garnish, slice the honeydew into ⅛-inch-thick slices. Use a small heart-shaped cookie cutter (about 1 inch) to cut out 8 hearts. Thread 2 hearts onto a toothpick or cocktail pick so the bottom points meet. Repeat with the remaining hearts on 3 more toothpicks.

Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with ice. Add the melon liqueur, vodka, lime juice, and 1 ounce simple syrup (reserve the remaining syrup for another use). Cover and shake vigorously until cold, 10 to 20 seconds. Strain between the prepared glasses and top each with a splash of sparkling water.

To garnish the drinks, rest one pick horizontally across the rim of each glass. Place a second pick upright so it is perpendicular to the horizontal pick, aligning the heart points in the center to create a four-leaf clover.
