From a pancake breakfast to homemade Cobb salad and hearty sandwiches, there’s no part of the day where bacon isn’t a welcome addition to the menu. Its salty, fatty flavor and crisp texture instantly makes any dish better. There are a lot of different theories on the best way to cook bacon, but one viral method promises to cook it to perfection—without splattering oil all over your stovetop. Instead of using a regular skillet to cook bacon on the stovetop, you’ll use a deep pot. Think it sounds strange? You’re not the only one.

The viral video, which has amassed more than 18 million views on TikTok, was first posted by user @_jenifer___. Many social media users took to the comments section to share their skepticism of the method. That is, until they saw the final result: a plate of perfectly crispy bacon and a clean stovetop. Instead of layering strips of bacon in a single layer in a regular skillet—the way that most of us do it—here’s the demonstrated technique: add all of the bacon to a deep pot set over medium to medium-high heat and cook, tossing with tongs, until the fat is rendered from the bacon and it is crispy and evenly browned.

The bacon essentially is deep-fried in the rendered fat, which ensures that each strip gets perfectly crispy sans burning. But unlike a regular skillet, the deep sides keep the fat contained to the pot and off of your stovetop, countertops, and every other surface in sight. Continue to toss the bacon strips frequently as they cook to prevent each one from sticking to the bottom or sides of your pot and ensure that each strip crisps evenly. Next, transfer the cooked bacon to a paper towel-lined plate or sheet tray to drain off any excess grease and allow to cool before serving.

Is this the prettiest or most professional way to cook bacon? Not exactly. But it gets the job done, especially if you’re trying to cook a large batch of bacon all at once. Although cooking bacon in the oven helps you avoid splattering grease everywhere in your kitchen, the process takes definitively longer than this one-pot method and it’s not as efficient if you’re trying to cook bacon for a crowd. Plus, you’ll be left with multiple sheet pans to clean.

This mess-free, time-saving technique is definitely one that you should try first thing in the morning.
