If you’ve ever been to one of Disney’s theme parks, you likely know about the beloved snack known as Dole Whip. The original recipe was created by the fruit company Dole—hence the name—but it wasn’t until Disneyland started selling the frozen treat in the 1980s that it developed a cult-like following. The frozen pineapple soft serve is now one of Disney’s most popular desserts, which is why we knew we had to recreate the magic in our own kitchens.

What is pineapple Dole Whip made of?

While the Dole Whip you find at Disney parks is made with flavored mixes, this homemade version is made with just a handful of ingredients found at your local supermarket, like pineapple juice and frozen pineapple. Along with the fruit, Dole Whip is blended together with vanilla ice cream, and we added a bit of lime juice and salt to round out the flavors.

Is there milk in Dole Whip?

Yes, since there's ice cream, which is made with milk. To make it dairy-free, simply use an ice cream that's made with alternative milk, like coconut milk.

What does Dole Whip taste like?

Dole Whip has the taste and consistency of soft-serve ice cream. It’s sweet from the ice cream, citrusy from the pineapple, and perfectly refreshing.

What's a Dole Whip float?

At Disney, you can order a Dole Whip on its own or make it into a float. To make a float, add a little more pineapple juice over the top of your Dole Whip and finish it off with a maraschino cherry.

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup pineapple juice
  • 1 cup vanilla ice cream
  • 2 cups frozen pineapple
  • 1 Tbsp. lime juice
  • Pinch of sea salt

Directions

    1. Step 1In a high-powered blender, combine the pineapple juice, vanilla ice cream, frozen pineapple, lime juice and salt. Blend on medium-high speed, stopping to push the pineapple chunks down into the blender as needed.
    2. Step 2Transfer to a bowl; cover and freeze for 30 minutes.
    3. Step 3Scoop and serve. Alternatively, transfer to a piping bag fitted with a large star tip and pipe into small serving bowls. (This method will make it look like it came out of a soft serve machine.)
