What is garlic shrimp?
Beyond the plump, pink, tail-on shrimp and aromatic sliced garlic, the ingredients for garlic shrimp are quite similar to those in shrimp scampi. The shrimp are coated in spicy Creole seasoning to add a kick, then cooked in some olive oil on the stove. The sauce is a white wine, lemon, and butter mixture that coats the shrimp perfectly. A final sprinkling of fresh parsley and a squeeze of lemon juice and this shrimp is ready to dig into!
How do you devein shrimp?
Many stores sell shrimp that are already peeled and deveined, which saves time. If prepping them yourself, rinse the shrimp under cold water, remove the shell, and use a small knife to make a shallow slit along the back. Lift out or rinse away the dark vein, then pat the shrimp dry before cooking to ensure they sear properly.
Can you use frozen shrimp?
Yes. Frozen peeled and deveined shrimp are a convenient option, so feel free to use them. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator, or, for a quicker method, place them in a sealed bag and submerge in cold water, changing the water every 30 minutes until thawed. Is garlic shrimp spicy?
The Creole seasoning gives it a little kick, but this dish isn't overwhelmingly spicy. If you're sensitive to heat, choose a milder Creole seasoning or skip the Creole seasoning and just use a sprinkle of paprika, salt, and pepper instead.
How long does leftover garlic shrimp last in the fridge?
Leftover garlic shrimp will keep in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 day. Reheat gently on the stovetop before serving.
Is there a substitute for white wine in this garlic shrimp recipe?
White wine is a key flavor component in this recipe, but if you’d prefer not to use it, then you can add a splash of chicken broth instead.

Ingredients
- 2 lb. jumbo shrimp (21 to 25 count), peeled and deveined, tails on
- 2 Tbsp. olive oil, divided
- 1 1/2 tsp. Creole seasoning
- 1 tsp. paprika
- 1/4 cup (4 Tbsp.) unsalted butter, divided
- 5 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
- 1 tsp. lemon zest
- 1/2 tsp. freshly ground black pepper
- 1/2 cup white wine
- 3 Tbsp. fresh lemon juice, plus more to taste
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
- Kosher salt, to taste
- Toasted bread, for serving
Directions
- Step 1In a large bowl, toss the shrimp with 1 tablespoon of oil, Creole seasoning, and paprika.
- Step 2In a large sauté pan over medium heat, heat the remaining 1 tablespoon of oil. Add half of the shrimp in a single layer and cook until pink and curled on both sides, about 3 minutes. Remove the shrimp to a plate and repeat with the remaining shrimp. Wipe out the pan.
- Step 3Add 2 tablespoons of butter to the saute pan and melt over medium heat. Stir in the garlic, lemon zest, and pepper, cooking until fragrant, 1 minute. Pour in the wine and let simmer for 2 minutes.
- Step 4Stir in the lemon juice, shrimp, and remaining 2 tablespoons of butter. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the butter is melted and the shrimp are heated through. Sprinkle with parsley. Season with salt and more lemon juice. Serve the shrimp and some of the pan sauce with toasted bread.
Tip: The white wine can be replaced with sherry cooking wine or chicken broth for a non-alcoholic option.
