If you're not up to speed on the magic of dump cakes, this is how the dessert goes: Dump some sort of canned fruit filling into a buttered baking dish, sprinkle dry boxed cake over the surface, top with pats of cold butter, and bake. You don't even have to stir it! If this fruit dessert sounds crazy, that's because it is—but the results will blow your mind. It turns out sort of like a cobbler or crisp because it has fruit on the bottom and a buttery crust on top. It's also similar because, instead of slicing it, you just scoop it up with a spoon and eat it with vanilla ice cream! This apple version is so dang good (especially drizzled with caramel sauce) and unbelievably easy. If you need a last minute Thanksgiving dessert, make this!

What's in apple pie spice?

It's a mixture of cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice. If you don't have any apple pie spice on hand, you can mix up your own or just use pumpkin pie spice instead. These two blends have a lot of the same ingredients, but pumpkin pie spice also has ginger and cloves. It won't taste exactly the same, but it'll be close enough!

How do you store apple dump cake?

Cover and store the dump cake in the refrigerator for up to three days. Depending on how much cake you want to reheat, you can warm it in a 350 degree Fahrenheit oven for about 20 minutes or in a microwave for about 30 seconds.

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) salted butter, cut into slices, plus more for the baking dish
  • 2 (21-oz.) cans apple pie filling
  • 1 tsp. apple pie spice
  • 1 (15.25-oz.) box yellow cake mix
  • Jarred caramel sauce, for serving (optional)
  • Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream, for serving (optional)

Directions

    1. Step 1Preheat the oven to 350°F. Butter a 9-by-13-inch baking dish.
    2. Step 2Dump the apple pie filling into the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle with the apple pie spice. Sprinkle the cake mix over the top of the fruit. Distribute the butter slices evenly over the cake mix.
    3. Step 3Bake until the top is brown and bubbly, 50 minutes to 1 hour.
    4. Step 4Serve drizzled with caramel sauce and topped with ice cream, if you like.
