If you're hosting a party this summer or just like idea of having margaritas on demand, you've got to try these freezer door margaritas. You essentially mix everything up in a glass bottle (an empty, clean tequila bottle or even a jar works great!), then keep it stored on your freezer door. When you get a hankering for batch cocktails, just give the bottle a good shake, rim a glass with some salt, and pour yourself one! It's ice-cold, perfectly sweet, and oh-so refreshing—a real treat on a hot summer day. I can't think of anything better for entertaining. Plus, they keep in the freezer for up to two months so you can prep 'em far in advance. Cheers!

What's the best tequila for margaritas?

You don't need anything fancy or aged to make a round of delicious margaritas. I usually reach for a bottle of blanco tequila, also called silver tequila. It has a fresh, crisp flavor that really complements the other ingredients. Here's everything you need to know about the best tequila for margaritas.

Why do you add water to freezer door margaritas?

Traditional margaritas are shaken with ice before serving. The ice not only chills the cocktail, but also slightly dilutes it, so it's perfectly balanced. Since freezer door margaritas skip the shaking step, a bit of water is added to the mix upfront to achieve that same balance and ensure the drink isn't too strong.

Ingredients

Simple Syrup

  • 1 cup granulated sugar

Margaritas

  • 1 1/4 cups tequila
  • 3/4 cup orange liqueur
  • 2/3 cup fresh lime juice (from about 4 limes), plus lime wedges for serving
  • Kosher salt, for seasoning and serving

Directions

    1. Step 1For the simple syrup: In a small saucepan, whisk together the sugar and 1 cup water over medium heat. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the sugar is completely dissolved (the syrup should be clear, not cloudy), 2 to 3 minutes. Remove from the heat and transfer to a heatproof container with a lid. Let cool completely, about an hour on the counter or 30 minutes in the refrigerator.
    2. Step 2For the margaritas: Use a funnel to pour the tequila, orange liqueur, lime juice, a pinch of salt, 1/4 cup of the simple syrup, and 2/3 cup water into a clean 750-milliliter bottle or 1-quart freezer-safe glass jar. (Any remaining simple syrup will keep in the refrigerator up to 2 weeks.) Put the lid on the bottle and shake to combine. Place in the freezer door until very cold, at least 3 hours and up to 2 months.
    3. Step 3When ready to serve, remove the bottle from the freezer. If the margaritas are frozen solid, let the bottle sit at room temperature for 5 to 10 minutes to thaw slightly. Then, give the bottle a good shake. For a salted rim, place 2 tablespoons salt on a small plate. Run a lime wedge around the rims of 6 glasses and dip in the salt to coat. Fill the glasses with ice, add the margaritas, and garnish with lime wedges.
