grape salad

Grape salad may not sound like the most obvious addition to a summer picnic menu, but one bite is all it takes to understand why it's been a Southern potluck favorite for generations. It's cool, creamy, and refreshing, with juicy grapes in every bite and just the right amount of crunch from toasted pecans. The combination lands somewhere between a fruit salad and a dessert, making it right at home alongside a cookout spread.

This recipe keeps the ingredient list short and sweet. Red and green seedless grapes are coated in a fluffy mixture of cream cheese, sour cream, vanilla, and a touch of brown sugar for just enough sweetness without overpowering the fruit. A sprinkle of brown sugar and toasted pecans on top adds a caramel-like finish and irresistible crunch.

One of the best things about grape salad is how easy it is to prepare. It comes together in just minutes and can be made ahead, making it an ideal choice for any meal. Whether you use all red grapes, all green grapes, or a combination of the two, you'll end up with a simple, crowd-pleasing recipe that's just as welcome on the dessert table as it is next to the potato salad.

What are the best grapes to use in grape salad?

Any seedless grapes will work here, so choose what looks best at the store. Red grapes tend to be sweeter, while green grapes offer a bit more tartness. A mix of both gives the dish a nice balance and pretty color contrast. For a fun twist, try a sweeter variety, like cotton candy grapes, which will make the salad feel more like a dessert.

Can you use other fruits besides grapes?

Definitely! The creamy dressing in this recipe pairs beautifully with all types of fruit. Try it with halved strawberries, fresh pineapple chunks, blueberries, or diced peaches. You can even mix a few varieties together for a colorful twist. Just be sure to use fruit that holds up well when tossed in dressing.

How far ahead can you make grape salad?

You can prepare it up to two days in advance and store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator. For the best texture, wait to add the brown sugar and toasted pecans until just before serving—this keeps the topping crisp and delicious.

Can you freeze grape salad?

Freezing is not recommended. The creamy dressing can separate after thawing, and the grapes will lose their crisp texture, resulting in a watery salad.

Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup pecans
  • 4 oz. cream cheese, at room temperature
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
  • Pinch of kosher salt
  • 3 Tbsp. light brown sugar
  • 2 lb. seedless grapes (red, green, or a combination)

Directions

    1. Step 1In a medium skillet, toast the pecans over medium heat, stirring frequently, until fragrant and a deep golden brown, 4 to 5 minutes. Transfer to a cutting board to cool slightly, about 5 minutes, then roughly chop. Set aside.
    2. Step 2In a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment or in a large bowl with a hand mixer, beat together the cream cheese, sour cream, vanilla, salt, and 2 tablespoons of the brown sugar until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes. Add the grapes and toss to coat.
    3. Step 3Transfer to a serving bowl and sprinkle with the remaining 1 tablespoon brown sugar and the toasted pecans.
