I'll let you in on a little secret: I'm not the biggest banana fan. Never have been! But that doesn’t mean my family and friends don’t love them. And when I’m serving a crowd at a holiday cookout, these red, white, and blue chocolate-covered banana pops are always a hit from the very first bite.

Frozen banana pops are one of the easiest no-bake desserts you can make for summer. All you need are bananas, semisweet chocolate, white chocolate, a little coconut oil, and your favorite sprinkles. I used festive red, white, and blue sprinkles to make them perfect for the Fourth of July, but they’re a fun treat for any occasion. Swap in pastel sprinkles for Easter, orange and black for Halloween, or rainbow sprinkles for birthdays and other celebrations throughout the year.

Because the bananas are frozen before they're dipped, the chocolate sets almost instantly, making this recipe quick and easy enough for kids to help with. Keep a batch in the freezer, and you'll always have a cool, chocolatey snack ready for hot summer afternoons.

If you happen to love bananas, try this old-fashioned banana pudding or banana cream pie next!

Can you make chocolate-covered banana pops ahead of time?

Yes! These frozen banana pops are an excellent make-ahead dessert. Once the chocolate has completely hardened, transfer the banana pops to an airtight container or freezer-safe bag. Store them in the freezer for up to 2 weeks. For the best texture, let them sit at room temperature for 2 to 3 minutes before serving.

Why do you freeze the bananas before dipping them in chocolate?

Freezing the bananas first helps them hold their shape and allows the melted chocolate to harden almost immediately. This gives you just enough time to add the sprinkles before the chocolate fully sets.

Why do you add coconut oil to the chocolate?

Coconut oil helps thin the melted chocolate, making it easier to coat the bananas evenly. It also gives the chocolate coating a smoother finish and helps it harden with a nice snap once frozen.

Ingredients

  • 4 bananas
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 4 Tbsp. coconut oil
  • 1 cup white chocolate chips
  • Red, white, and blue sprinkles, for decorating

Directions

    1. Step 1Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Peel the bananas and cut them in half crosswise. Insert a wooden ice pop stick into the cut end of each. Freeze on the prepared baking sheet until firm, 3 to 4 hours.
    2. Step 2In a small microwave-safe bowl, melt the semisweet chocolate chips with 2 tablespoons coconut oil in the microwave. Pour the mixture into a tall glass.
    3. Step 3In a second small microwave-safe bowl, melt the white chocolate chips with the remaining 2 tablespoons coconut oil. Pour the mixture into a second tall glass.
    4. Step 4Dip the bananas in either the semisweet or white chocolate twice, let the excess drip off, then return to the baking sheet.
    5. Step 5Drizzle with more semisweet or white chocolate, if desired, and top right away with red, white, and blue sprinkles (the chocolate sets quickly!). Return to the freezer until ready to serve.
