You probably regularly wash your sheets, blankets, and pillowcases on laundry day—but what about your actual pillows? "Not to be icky, but the way your sheets, mattress covers, blankets, and even mattress are a breeding ground for anything that sheds from one's body, like hair, skin, or oils—the same is true for your pillow, beneath the pillowcase surface," says Lauri Leadley, the founder and president at Valley Sleep Center.

Over time, this buildup can make pillows less clean and comfortable and even affect your overall sleep environment. To keep your bed feeling its best, it's important to learn the proper way to care for your pillows. From how often to wash pillows to easy expert tips on how to maintain them between cleanings, here's everything you need to know.

How Often Should You Wash Your Pillows?

You don't have to wash your pillows as frequently as you do the rest of your bedding, but letting them go too long allows oils, sweat, and dust to build up. Experts recommend washing pillows every three to six months, along with routine pillowcase changes.

"Although I launder sheets anywhere from two to three times a week, pillows are a bit of a production," Leadley explains. So, I wash my pillows every couple of months. As long as your pillow cases are washed frequently, this duration of time works." Following a simple schedule like this will help preserve your pillow's shape and comfort while also reducing allergens.

What's the Best Way to Wash Pillows?

While you should always follow the instructions on the manufacturer's label or website, in general, most pillows can be tossed in the washing machine, Leadley says. "Even soft, feathery, down pillows can be laundered. I like to wash mine in the washing machine and then pop it in the dryer on a warm setting. It truly does come out like new," she adds.

No matter your technique, it's essential to make sure your pillow is completely dry before use as wet pillows can develop mold or mildew. And if you're unsure about whether your pillow is machine washable, Leadley recommends dry cleaning over hand washing.

How Can You Keep Pillows Fresh Between Washes?

Between washes, even small, healthy habits can make a big difference. Leadley recommends, "Launder your sheets frequently! Before you slip them back on (and that includes the pillow cover that sits under the actual linens), shake out the pillow, fluff it up, and if you feel so inclined, vacuum them lightly with the hose attachment."

Using pillow protectors, airing out pillows, and keeping your bedroom comfortably cool also help maintain freshness. Just follow these simple tips to keep your pillows fresh, and you can rest easy when you lay your head down at night.
