air fryer chicken breast
C.W. Newell

If there’s one dinner I make on repeat when life gets busy, it’s simple chicken—and these air fryer chicken breasts are super easy and reliable . This recipe is all about quick prep and big flavor, with hardly any cleanup. When you need a protein that works for everything, this chicken is a definite keeper.

Boneless, skinless chicken breasts get rubbed with olive oil and a blend of pantry spices like garlic powder, paprika, Italian seasoning, and black pepper. The air fryer does the rest, cooking the chicken evenly and locking in moisture while giving the outside a lightly seasoned, golden finish. Flipping the chicken halfway through ensures it cooks just right, and a short rest at the end keeps every bite tender and juicy.

What I love most is how versatile these air fryer chicken breasts are. Serve them with roasted vegetables, slice them for salads, tuck them into sandwiches, or stash them in the fridge for easy lunches all week long. They're fast, dependable, and endlessly useful—the kind of back-pocket recipe you’ll reach for again and again when you need to get a meal on the table without a lot of thinking.

How long does it take to cook chicken breasts in an air fryer?

Chicken breasts typically take around 25 minutes to fully cook in a 375°F air fryer. Flip them halfway through for even cooking, and always check their doneness with a meat thermometer—the internal temperature should reach 165°F at the thickest part before serving.

Do you need to preheat the air fryer for air fryer chicken breasts?

It depends on your air fryer. Some models require preheating, while others heat up quickly and don’t need it. The best place to check is your air fryer’s manual. That said, if your air fryer does have a preheat setting, go ahead and use it—preheating helps the chicken cook more evenly and gives it better color on the outside.

How do you keep air fryer chicken breasts juicy?

Pat the chicken dry, coat it lightly with olive oil, and season it well before cooking. Just as important, avoid overcooking—use a meat thermometer to check the chicken's doneness. Finally, let it rest for about 5 minutes after cooking so the juices can redistribute, keeping the chicken moist and tender.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 tsp. kosher salt
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp. Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 tsp. onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp. paprika
  • 1/2 tsp. black pepper
  • 2 lb. boneless, skinless chicken breasts (3 to 4 breasts)
  • 2 Tbsp. olive oil

Directions

    1. Step 1In a small bowl, mix together the salt, garlic powder, Italian seasoning, onion powder, paprika, and pepper.
    2. Step 2Pat the chicken dry with a paper towel, coat well with the olive oil, then season all sides with the spice mixture, rubbing it in to coat. Preheat the air fryer to 375°F if necessary.
    3. Step 3Place the chicken in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Cook for 12 minutes, flip, and continue to cook until the internal temperature reaches 165°F in the thickest part of the breast, 12 to 14 minutes more.
    4. Step 4Let the chicken rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Tip: Store leftover chicken breast in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months.
