the pioneer woman's chicken crescent roll ups recipe
C.W. Newell

If you were to look up the definition of comfort food in the dictionary, I’m pretty sure you’d find a photo of these chicken crescent roll-ups. They remind me of my apple dumplings, since this recipe follows the same pattern of forming little crescent roll bundles and baking them in a sauce. But unlike the apple dumplings that swim in soda, these savory roll-ups are baked in a creamy cheddar cheese sauce.

As they bake, the crescent rolls get golden and flaky on top and stay soft and buttery on the bottom. The inside of the roll-ups is just as dreamy, with chicken, cream cheese, green onion, and a little jalapeño. Don’t worry—they aren’t spicy. The jalapeño simply balances the richness of the dish. Totally family-friendly! And since they start with rotisserie chicken, they’re easy enough to pull together on a weeknight, no matter how busy. Recipes made with rotisserie chicken are such time-savers!

If your family loves crescent roll recipes as much as mine, they’ll devour this dish.

Can you make chicken crescent roll-ups ahead of time?

Wait to fill the crescent rolls and assemble the dish until just before baking. If you want to work ahead, make the filling and sauce up to 2 days ahead and store them in separate airtight containers in the refrigerator. Gently reheat the sauce until pourable before adding it to the baking dish.

How do you store leftover chicken crescent roll-ups?

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Just keep in mind that the crescent rolls will continue to soften as they sit in the sauce.

To reheat, cover the roll-ups and warm them in a 350-degree Fahrenheit oven until heated through. Uncover the dish during the last few minutes to help crisp up the tops. You can also reheat individual servings in the microwave, though the crescent rolls will be softer.

Ingredients

  • Cooking spray, for the baking dish
  • 1 1/4 cups whole milk
  • 1 (10.5-ounce) can cream of chicken soup
  • 3/4 tsp. Italian seasoning
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese (about 6 oz.)
  • 1 (8-ounce) block cream cheese, cubed, at room temperature
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp. black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp. kosher salt
  • A few dashes of hot sauce (optional)
  • 2 cups finely shredded chicken (from 1 rotisserie chicken)
  • 1 jalapeño, seeded and finely chopped
  • 4 green onions, sliced
  • 2 (8-ounce) tubes crescent rolls (such as Pillsbury)

Directions

    1. Step 1Preheat the oven to 350°F. Spray a 9-by-13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
    2. Step 2In a small saucepan, combine the milk, cream of chicken soup, Italian seasoning, and ½ cup of the cheddar over medium heat. Bring to a gentle simmer, stirring frequently, until the cheese is melted, 2 to 3 minutes. Remove from the heat and pour into the prepared baking dish.
    3. Step 3In a large bowl, mix the cream cheese with an electric hand mixer or sturdy spatula until smooth. Stir in the garlic powder, pepper, salt, and a few dashes of hot sauce, if using. Fold in the chicken, jalapeño, 2 of the sliced green onions, and the remaining 1 cup cheddar.
    4. Step 4Working swiftly to keep the dough cold, unroll the crescent dough and separate the perforated dough into 16 triangles. Place 2 packed tablespoons of filling (a cookie scoop helps a lot) along the short edge of a triangle and roll up the filling toward the pointed end. Pinch the sides to seal. Repeat with the remaining dough and filling. Nestle the roll-ups into the sauce in the baking dish.
    5. Step 5Bake until golden and bubbly, 35 to 40 minutes. Let sit at least 5 minutes before sprinkling with the remaining 2 sliced green onions and serving.
