If you’ve ever been asked to bring an appetizer to a party at the last minute and immediately felt a little panicked, this 3-ingredient sausage dip is about to become your go-to. It’s one of those recipes that feels almost too easy to be real, but somehow always disappears first at any gathering. All you need is a pound of sausage, a block of cream cheese, and a jar of salsa—no chopping, no measuring, and no overthinking required.

The sausage gives the dip plenty of savory flavor, the cream cheese makes it rich and scoopable, and the salsa ties everything together with just the right amount of zip. Right before serving, sprinkle the top with sliced scallions and fresh cilantro to add a little color and freshness. Serve it warm with a big bowl of tortilla chips, and you’ve got a crowd-pleasing dip that works for game day, church potlucks, or any time you need something easy and comforting.

What is sausage dip made of?

Sausage dip is made with just three simple ingredients: sausage, cream cheese, and salsa. It’s a classic, no-fail combination, but it’s also easy to customize. You can swap in hot Italian sausage or Mexican chorizo for extra heat, or use another meltable cheese—like Velveeta—instead of cream cheese if you prefer a smoother, cheesier dip.

What kind of salsa is best for sausage dip?

Any thick, chunky salsa works great for this easy dip. You can use mild, medium, or hot—whatever your preference! You could even use salsa verde or a can of Rotel for another variation.

Can you make this sausage dip ahead of time?

Yes! Sausage dip cooks quickly—about 10 minutes in a cast-iron skillet—but it’s also easy to prep in advance if you’re bringing it to a party. Once it's cooked, transfer the dip to a small 1½-quart casserole dish and let it cool completely. Cover and refrigerate until ready to bake, or for up to four days. When it’s time to serve, let the dish sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes while you preheat the oven to 375-degrees Fahrenheit. Cover with foil and bake for 20 to 25 minutes, until hot and bubbly. For an extra-cheesy finish, sprinkle shredded cheddar on top and bake uncovered—no one will mind the upgrade.

How long can sausage dip sit out?

Don't let this dip sit out for more than two hours. Refrigerate or reheat it after that.

What should you serve with sausage dip?

Tortilla chips are the classic choice, but crackers, pita chips, sliced toasted baguette, or even fresh veggies work well for dipping too.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb. pork sausage, such as Jimmy Dean
  • 8 oz. cream cheese
  • 1 cup chunky salsa
  • Thinly sliced green onion and chopped cilantro, to serve
  • Tortilla chips, to serve

Directions

    1. Step 1Heat a 10-inch cast-iron skillet over medium heat until very hot. Add the sausage and break up into small pieces with a wooden spoon. Cook until no pink pieces remain, about 6 minutes.
    2. Step 2Reduce the heat to medium-low. Add the cream cheese and break up into smaller pieces. Add the salsa and stir well to combine. Continue to stir until all of the cream cheese is melted, about 3 minutes.
    3. Step 3Top with scallions and cilantro and serve right out of the skillet with tortilla chips.

Tip: This dip is also delicious rolled up in a warm tortilla for a quick weeknight dinner or game day taco!
