With my boys playing college football and a big rivalry between Ladd's and my alma maters, we take game day very seriously in our house. And by game day, I mean snacks. We simply cannot imagine a Saturday of football without a full spread of crowd-pleasing bites, and this football cheese ball has quickly become one of my all-time favorites. It’s creamy, flavorful, and packed with fresh herbs and cheese. But the real kicker? It’s covered in a crunchy, sweet-and-savory coating of candied bacon and toasted nuts. I mean, how could you go wrong?

This cheese ball is perfect for a football-themed party, and shaping it into a football—complete with “laces” made out of cheese strips—makes it extra festive. Serve it on a big spread with hot honey chicken tenders, Frito chili pie, and football cereal treats and the food will be so good no one will care who wins the game!

But here’s the best part: If you’re bringing this cheese ball to a gathering that’s not football-related, you don’t have to fuss with the football shape. Just roll it into a simple round ball and serve it as a classic cheese ball appetizer. It’s every bit as tasty and just as impressive.

Can you make this football cheese ball ahead of time?

Yes! You can assemble the cheese mixture, shape it, and refrigerate it (tightly wrapped) up to 2 days in advance. Just roll it in the bacon and nuts right before serving so it stays fresh and crunchy. Any leftovers will keep for 4 days if stored in an airtight container. The flavors actually get better as it chills! Just remember the nuts will soften a bit as it sits, though they will still taste delicious.

Can you make this football cheese ball without bacon?

Definitely! You can skip the bacon entirely and roll the cheese ball in toasted nuts, fresh herbs, or even crushed pretzels if you prefer.

What should you serve with this football cheese ball?

Crackers of any variety, pretzel thins, and sturdy cut-up vegetables are my go-to dippers for this cheese ball. Crostini or pita chips work great, too!

Ingredients

  • 1 garlic clove
  • 1/4 tsp. kosher salt
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, roughly chopped, plus more for garnish
  • 1 Tbsp. roughly chopped fresh chives, plus more for garnish
  • 1 Tbsp. fresh dill, roughly chopped, plus more for garnish
  • 8 oz. cream cheese, at room temperature, diced
  • 8 oz. Monterey Jack cheese, grated (about 2 cups)
  • 1 Tbsp. sour cream
  • 1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 tsp. paprika
  • Juice of 1/2 lemon
  • 1 Tbsp. black pepper, plus more to taste
  • 2/3 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 lb. bacon
  • 1/3 cup walnuts or pecans
  • 4 slices white American cheese
  • Crackers, pretzel thins, and cut-up vegetables, for serving

Directions

    1. Step 1On a cutting board, chop the garlic, then sprinkle it with the salt and mash it into a paste with a fork.
    2. Step 2Transfer the garlic paste to a food processor along with the parsley, chives, and dill. Pulse until finely chopped, about 10 times. Add the cream cheese, Monterey Jack, sour cream, Worcestershire sauce, paprika, lemon juice, and a pinch of pepper and process until well combined, about 30 seconds.
    3. Step 3Transfer the cheese mixture to a sheet of plastic wrap and fold the plastic around the cheese. Use the plastic wrap to help form the cheese into a football shape. Refrigerate until firm, at least 1 hour and up to overnight. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 350°F. Line two baking sheets with foil.
    4. Step 4In a shallow dish, whisk together the brown sugar and 1 tablespoon black pepper. One at a time, press each slice of bacon into the sugar to coat both sides. Arrange in a single layer on the prepared baking sheets.
    5. Step 5Bake until the bacon is browned at the edges and starting to crisp, about 25 minutes. Transfer the hot bacon to a wire rack to cool completely. (If it cools on the baking sheets it will stick.)
    6. Step 6Spread the nuts on a baking sheet and bake until fragrant, 5 to 7 minutes. Let cool.
    7. Step 7Finely chop the bacon and nuts and combine in a large shallow bowl. Unwrap the cheese ball and carefully roll it in the bacon mixture to coat it completely. Transfer the cheese ball to a platter. Use clean hands or a piece of plastic wrap to gently reshape it into a football pressing in any loose bits as needed.
    8. Step 8Using a sharp knife, cut the American cheese into ½-inch-wide strips. Place one strip across each end of the football, trimming as needed, and another strip lengthwise down the center. Cut four more strips about 2½ inches long and arrange them crosswise over the center strip to form the laces. If needed, use a small dab of sour cream to help the strips adhere. Scatter additional chopped herbs around the cheese ball to resemble turf. Serve with crackers, pretzel thins, and cut vegetables.

Tip: The cheese ball can be made up to 2 days ahead; wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate. Add the bacon-nut coating and reshape just before serving for best texture. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
