Halloween is the perfect excuse to get a little spooky in the kitchen, and these bat cupcakes are a frightfully fun treat! Start with soft, chocolatey cupcakes, top them with creamy frosting, and transform them into the cutest little bats around. The best part? Their faces come together with just a few pantry sweets—Oreos, candy melts, and M&M's—so there’s no need for any fancy decorating skills. Kids will love giving each bat its own quirky expression (the sillier, the better!), and adults will appreciate having an activity and snack all in one.

These treats are perfect for Halloween parties, school celebrations, or just a cozy afternoon of baking. The cupcakes stay tender and moist thanks to a classic cake-mix-and-pudding combo, and the playful cookie “wings” give them just the right amount of crunch. Line them up on a platter and they look like a tiny colony ready to take flight. Then watch them disappear one by one as everyone dives in. Scary, silly, and irresistibly chocolatey, these cupcakes are bound to steal the show this Halloween. If you're looking for more fun Halloween baking ideas, then try these ghost cupcakes, Halloween dirt cups, or a spiderweb cake next!

How do you make the bat wings and faces for bat cupcakes?

The wings come from halved sandwich cookies, while the faces use candy melts for eyes and fangs. It’s easy, fun, and a great decorating project for kids!

Can you freeze bat cupcakes?

Yes! Freeze the unfrosted cupcakes for up to 3 months. Thaw and decorate when ready for an easy, make-ahead Halloween treat.

Can you use store-bought frosting for bat cupcakes?

If you’re short on time, you can use store-bought chocolate frosting. But the homemade buttercream here is so fluffy and chocolatey, it’s worth the extra few minutes.

Ingredients

  • 1 (15.25-ounce) box devil’s food cake mix
  • 1 (3.9-ounce) box instant chocolate pudding mix
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups (3 sticks) salted butter, at room temperature
  • 5 cups powdered sugar
  • 3 Tbsp. heavy cream
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 36 chocolate sandwich cookies (such as Oreos)
  • 60 white candy melts
  • 48 red candy-coated chocolates (such as M&M's)

Directions

    1. Step 1Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line 24 muffin cups with paper liners.
    2. Step 2In a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment or in a large bowl with a hand mixer, beat the cake mix, pudding mix, milk, vegetable oil, eggs, and ½ cup water until smooth and combined, about 2 minutes. Divide the batter evenly between the muffin cups. Bake until the tops spring back when lightly pressed or a toothpick comes out clean, 18 to 20 minutes. Let cool completely, about 30 minutes.
    3. Step 3Meanwhile, in a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment or in a large bowl with a hand mixer, beat the butter on medium-high speed until creamy and light, about 2 minutes. Reduce the speed to low and add half the powdered sugar, mixing until combined. Add the heavy cream and mix to incorporate. Add the cocoa powder, vanilla, and remaining powdered sugar and mix to incorporate. Increase the speed to medium-high and beat until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes.
    4. Step 4To make the eyes, spread a very small amount of frosting on the back of a red candy-coated chocolate and press it into the center of the flat side of a white candy melt. Repeat to make 48 eyes total.
    5. Step 5To make the faces, spread a small amount of frosting on the back of 2 eyes and place on a sandwich cookie, pressing gently to adhere. Repeat with the remaining eyes to make 24 faces total.
    6. Step 6Use a sharp or serrated knife to cut the remaining 12 candy melts into small wedges—about 6 per melt. Working with 2 wedges at a time, spread a little frosting on the back of the wedges and place them on a cookie underneath the eyes to make fangs. Repeat with the remaining wedges.
    7. Step 7Twist open the remaining 12 sandwich cookies and scrape off the frosting so you have 24 cookies (discard the frosting). Cut each cookie in half to make wings.
    8. Step 8Spread the remaining frosting on the cupcakes with a small offset spatula or butter knife. Alternatively, transfer the frosting to a piping bag or plastic zip-top bag, cut off the tip, and pipe the frosting to cover.
    9. Step 9To assemble the bats, place a bat face on top of a frosted cupcake. Insert a cookie half on either side behind the face for the wings. Repeat with the remaining cupcakes, faces, and wings.

Tip: If you want to make bat cupcakes ahead, you can bake the cupcakes up to 3 days in advance and store them, unfrosted, in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. They can be frozen for up to 3 months (defrost on the counter 1 hour before frosting). The frosting can be made up to 2 days in advance and stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. If the frosting is stiff, beat it in a stand mixer on medium-high speed until it is light and fluffy again.
