The Owens sisters are back!
After almost 30 years since the original, Practical Magic 2 has released a teaser trailer and it's our official first look at the long-awaited sequel.
Plot summary in case you need a refresher: The '90s movie centered around Sally and Gillian, the witchy Owens sisters, who live under a centuries-old hex that doomed any man who fell in love with one of them to an untimely death. Their story is based on the fourth novel in Alice Hoffman's Practical Magic series, The Book of Magic, and has promised to be a faithful continuation for the characters.
Despite that heavy premise, Practical Magic itself was surprisingly lighthearted! And by the looks of it, this sequel promises the same: It has heartfelt-if-not-cheesy dialogue, sisterly bond, a small town setting, and that all-around cozy feel that earned the original film its cult following.
After watching the teaser, there are some things we know for certain: Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, Stockard Channing, and Dianne Wiest are all reprising their roles as the Owens ladies. Because what would the sisters do without their pair of eccentric, sassy aunts?
The Owens house itself returns to the screen, that iconic Victorian mansion, which, if you ask the fans, is a main character in its own right (the wraparound porch! the rose garden! the kitchen with its copper pots and glass-fronted cabinets!). For all of the familiar faces, there are some new ones being introduced: Joey King and Maisie Williams as well as Lee Pace.
Notably absent is Aidan Quinn who played Gary Hallet, the cowboy-detective-turned-lover in the original, but there's no bad blood between him and the rest of the cast. "Yeah, we had a good time,” he said to the press, but no, he "wasn't asked." What does that mean? That he fell prey to the Owens family curse? But wasn't the curse broken at the end of the first movie? So many questions!
Also: Will there be a new love interest for Sally or Gillian this time 'round? How will Sally's daughters use or abuse the magical powers they've inherited? Will Jimmy make a ghastly return from the grave or is he gone for good? What new dark force threatens the Owens legacy and can they escape their fate after all? Will there be any surprise cameos from the supporting cast? Will Stevie Nicks contribute another witchy original song to the soundtrack? (Manifesting that one.) And, most important of all: Will there be another round of midnight margaritas?
We're about to find out—Practical Magic 2 is officially out in theaters on September 11.
