Well, that was one way to end a season!
Marshals wrapped its first season on Sunday, May 24, and the finale didn’t exactly send Kayce Dutton off into a peaceful Montana sunset. The Yellowstone spinoff left fans with more than one cliffhanger, a very unsettling betrayal, and a few big questions about who will still be standing when Season 2 begins.
The good news? We already know Marshals is coming back for another season, so the show actually has time to answer all of this. The better news, at least for anyone who spent the finale yelling at the TV, is that a couple of the cast members have already offered some hints about what comes next.
The biggest scare came in the final moments, when Cal and Belle were ambushed during an investigation. It looked bad, and in true Yellowstone fashion, the screen cut away before viewers could get any real answers. But Logan Marshall-Green told The Hollywood Reporter that Cal is alive, though “not necessarily unscathed.” He also teased that the same is true for “everybody in the damn show,” which sounds about right for a series where trouble travels faster than a pickup truck on a gravel road!
Arielle Kebbel also confirmed that Belle will return and said the new season picks up right from that finale moment. So, no, fans probably shouldn’t expect a neat little time jump past the chaos. Cal and Belle survived the attack, but that doesn’t mean they’re walking away untouched.
Then there’s Kayce, who ended the finale in a truly awful position without even knowing it. Tom Weaver was revealed as the man pulling the strings behind the violence, while Kayce’s son Tate was heading off with him for what was supposed to be a simple fishing trip. Kayce has survived plenty, but putting Tate anywhere near a newly revealed villain? That’s a whole different kind of panic.
The ending also sets up a bigger story for Season 2 around land, power, and the Weaver family’s true motives. In other words, Marshals is leaning right into the very thing Yellowstone fans know best: nobody fights dirtier than people trying to protect what they think belongs to them.
So what does the cliffhanger mean for the cast? Cal and Belle are back. Kayce and Tate are very much still in the middle of danger. And Tom Weaver just went from friendly rancher to the person everyone should be watching. Season 2 has a lot to clean up—and something tells us it will not be gentle about it!
