At first glance, Ransom Canyon seems pretty manageable. There’s Staten Kirkland brooding beneath a cowboy hat, Quinn O’Grady running the dance hall, and a few ranching families arguing about land. Easy enough! Then you discover that Staten’s chief rival is also his brother-in-law, two cousins are carrying secrets about the same deadly accident, and nearly every romance comes with at least one inconvenient family connection.
In other words, this town needs a chart.
The romantic Netflix Western revolves around three ranching dynasties—the Kirklands, Collinses, and Fullers—but the real story stretches well beyond bloodlines. Lifelong friendships function like family, ranch hands become heirs, and old high school feelings remain very much alive. Season 1 ties everyone together through the fight over Ransom Canyon’s land and Staten’s search for the truth about his son Randall’s death. Season 2 expands that world with previously unseen parents, siblings, and romantic complications, but we won’t spoil what happens after they arrive.
So whether you’re starting Ransom Canyon for the first time or need a refresher before (or during!) season 2, here’s who’s who on Ransom Canyon and how all the major characters are connected. Because remembering the cattle brands is one thing. Keeping the cousins, ex-wives, secret relatives, and love triangles straight is another thing entirely!
The Kirkland Family
Staten Kirkland
Staten is the owner of the Double K Ranch and the cowboy at the center of nearly every major storyline. He inherited the property from his grandfather, but his relationship with his father, Sam, has always been strained. Staten is grieving his wife, Amala, and their teenage son, Randall, while slowly allowing himself to imagine a future with Quinn.
Amala Kirkland
Amala was Staten’s late wife, Randall’s mother, Davis Collins’s sister, and Quinn’s best friend. She died before the main events of the series, but her absence still shapes the relationships between all four families. Quinn originally returned to Ransom Canyon to help Amala while she was ill, which makes her feelings for Staten both deeply rooted and understandably complicated.
Randall Kirkland
Randall was Staten and Amala’s son, Davis’s nephew, and Reid Collins’s cousin. His death in a car crash happens at the beginning of season 1 and becomes the mystery that pulls the entire town apart. Staten refuses to accept that it was simply an accident—and, as usual, the stubborn cowboy has a reason for digging.
Sam Kirkland
Sam is Staten’s father and a longtime Texas politician who traded daily ranch work for a career in the state Senate. He and Staten have very different ideas about the Double K, which is a polite way of saying that family meetings probably aren’t relaxing. Season 2 brings their long-running father-son tension closer to the surface.
Levi
Levi is Staten’s estranged half-brother, introduced in season 2. He grew up feeling shut out of the Kirkland family, so his arrival adds an entirely new branch to a family tree that was already leaning slightly sideways. That basic connection is all we’ll say—no season 2 spoilers here!
The Collins Family
Davis Collins
Davis owns the sleek, heavily mortgaged Bar W Ranch. He’s Amala’s brother, which makes him Staten’s brother-in-law and Randall’s uncle—even though he and Staten behave more like lifelong opponents. Davis is also Reid’s father, Paula Jo’s ex-husband, and one of the men competing for Quinn’s attention in season 1.
Paula Jo Collins
Paula Jo is Davis’s ex-wife and Reid’s mother. She remains deeply involved in the Collins family business, especially when money and control of the Bar W are at stake. She also has history with Staten, because apparently being connected by marriage wasn’t messy enough already!
Reid Collins
Reid is Davis and Paula Jo’s son, Staten’s nephew by marriage, and Randall’s cousin. At the start of season 1, he appears to have everything: the Bar W legacy, a starring role on the football team, and longtime girlfriend Lauren Brigman. Underneath all that confidence, however, Reid is carrying guilt about the night Randall died—and his friendship with Lucas becomes one of the season’s more unexpected relationships.
The O’Grady Family
Quinn O’Grady
Quinn is a concert pianist who returned home and took over Gracie’s Dance Hall after years in New York. She was Amala’s best friend and has loved Staten since they were young, although timing has never been particularly kind to either of them. She’s also Angie’s sister and, beginning in season 2, has to contend with the return of their mother, Claire.
Angie O’Grady
Angie is Quinn’s supportive sister and one of the steadier people in her life. She becomes more prominent in season 2 when their mother returns to Ransom Canyon, giving Quinn someone with whom to exchange the exact look sisters reserve for family chaos.
Claire
Claire is Quinn and Angie’s unpredictable mother. Her season 2 arrival fills in a missing piece of the O’Grady family story and helps explain some of the emotional baggage Quinn has been hauling around since long before Staten started brooding at her from across the room. We’ll leave the rest for the episodes to reveal.
The Brigman Family
Sheriff Dan Brigman
Dan is Ransom Canyon’s sheriff, Margaret’s husband, and Lauren’s protective father. His job puts him in charge of investigating Randall’s death, while his family connections make that investigation far more personal than he realizes at first. He also strongly disapproves of Lauren’s involvement with the Russell brothers—though stern conversations have never stopped a teenager on television.
Margaret Brigman
Margaret is Dan’s wife and Lauren’s mother. Her struggles with alcohol create tension at home, and her connection to Randall’s fatal crash becomes one of season 1’s biggest revelations. That discovery doesn’t just affect the Brigmans; it reaches straight into the Kirkland and Collins families, too.
Lauren Brigman
Lauren is Dan and Margaret’s daughter, Reid’s longtime girlfriend at the beginning of the series, and Lucas’s not-so-secret first love. Her relationships connect the Brigmans to both the wealthy Collins family and the struggling Russell brothers. She wants a future beyond Ransom Canyon, but home has a stubborn habit of pulling her back into everyone else’s problems.
The Russell Brothers
Lucas Russell
Lucas lives with his older brother, Kit, after their father abandons them. He works at Staten’s ranch, forms an unlikely friendship with Reid, and falls for Lauren—even while she is still technically dating Reid. Lucas is the sort of character who keeps trying to do the right thing, which naturally means everyone around him makes his life harder.
Kit Russell
Kit is Lucas’s rebellious older brother and the family member Lucas is forever rescuing from trouble. His history with Margaret Brigman creates another unexpected link between the Russell and Brigman families, while his closeness with Lauren becomes increasingly important. Even before season 2 begins, Kit has already managed to complicate his brother’s life without needing a ranch or inheritance to do it.
The Fuller Ranch Family
Cap Fuller
Cap is the crusty former Army captain who owns Fuller Ranch. He lost his only son in Afghanistan and has spent years keeping nearly everyone at arm’s length, though Ellie checks in on him like family. His biggest connection is one he doesn’t initially know about: Yancy Grey is his grandson.
Yancy Grey
Yancy arrives in town as a mysterious ranch hand and goes to work for Cap while concealing their real relationship. He is Cap’s grandson, Ellie’s love interest, and—thanks to the woman who appears in the season 1 finale—Sidney’s husband. That is quite a lot of personal history for one handsome drifter to squeeze beneath a cowboy hat!
Ellie Estevez
Ellie is Quinn’s close friend and business partner at Gracie’s. She isn’t related to Cap, but she is the daughter of one of his fallen Army friends and looks after him with the authority of someone who knows he’ll behave badly without supervision. She falls for Yancy, tying the dance hall directly to the Fuller Ranch story.
Sidney
Sidney is the mystery woman who arrives at the very end of season 1 and announces that she is Yancy’s wife. Their marriage comes from his secretive former life, making her an immediate complication for Yancy and Ellie. Beyond that, season 2 viewers can discover her many layers for themselves.
Everyone Else in the Ransom Canyon Orbit
Jake Longbow
Jake is Staten’s trusted right-hand man at the Double K. He isn’t a Kirkland by blood, but he knows the ranch, understands Staten, and operates with the comfortable honesty of someone who has been treated like family for years.
Kai
Kai is a police officer working under Sheriff Brigman and a friend of Ellie’s. His position connects him to the town’s investigations, while his loyalty to Ellie keeps him circling the Yancy situation with a healthy amount of suspicion.
Oliver
Oliver enters the story in season 2 as a musician Quinn meets during her return to New York. He follows her to Ransom Canyon, placing him directly in Staten’s romantic path. Think of him as the newest line connecting Quinn’s old dream to the life she left behind in Texas—and we’ll stop there before spoiling anything.
