Mauricio Scott is heading into his first 4th of July since being diagnosed with Alpha-Gal syndrome and there’s one Pawhuska favorite he’s already missing.

Alex Drummond opened up on Instagram this week about Mauricio’s diagnosis, which means he has to avoid red meat and other mammal products after developing the tick-related allergy. One follower asked the important holiday question: “Is Mauricio sad he can’t have hot dogs on the 4th! 🙁”

Alex shared the answer over a photo of steak bites, which pretty much gave it away before anyone even read the text. “He’s more sad about the iconic STEAK BITES 😭,” she wrote.

Poor Mauricio! Hot dogs would be one thing, but steak bites at a big 4th of July celebration in Pawhuska? That’s a whole separate level of food sadness.

The Drummond family is getting ready for the annual Patriotic Party on the Prairie, which Ree recently said will be the biggest one yet. “Festivities kick off at 4 pm in downtown Pawhuska, Oklahoma and won’t stop till midnight!!” Ree wrote on Instagram. She promised “delicious street food, live music, games, snow cones, face painting, dancing, fun, and FIREWORKS like you’ve possibly never seen before!!” She also added that Ladd and the cowboys set off the fireworks “and they have issues,” which sounds about right and also slightly concerning. In a festive way, of course.

This year, Mauricio will just have to navigate the food lines a little differently. Since his diagnosis, Alex has shared that his reactions started with terrible burning stomach pain after eating red meat, including brisket at their baby sprinkle. Bloodwork later confirmed he was positive for Alpha-Gal, and Alex said his levels were “super high.”

The good news is that Mauricio has been doing okay with chicken, turkey, and dairy so far. The less exciting news is that burgers, brisket, steak tacos, and yes, the iconic steak bites are off the table for now. Fortunately, if there’s one family that will make sure Mauricio is fed on the 4th, it’s the Drummonds!
