Happy birthday to Todd Drummond!
Ree Drummond’s son just celebrated his 22nd birthday. Which means her youngest baby isn’t quite a baby anymore! And while a birthday in one’s twenties tend to involve a big night out, Todd’s celebration looked a whole lot more like home: cowboys around the table and a meal cooked with lots of love. (Also, lots of brown food. More on that in a second.)
“Todd chose his menu,” Ree wrote over a close-up of his birthday plate, which included pan-fried pork chops, mashed potatoes, and corn. Then she added the perfect City Slickers quote for the occasion: “The food was brown, hot, and plenty of it.”
Could there be a more accurate description of a ranch birthday dinner? Probably not.
Ree’s pan-fried pork chops have long been a Drummond family favorite, and she’s said before that it’s “one of Ladd’s favorite meals, and one that I’ve been making for him and the kids for years.” The chops are simple, crispy, and cooked in a butter-and-oil combo, which is exactly the kind of thing that makes a weeknight dinner taste like a birthday feast.
Todd’s celebration also included a table full of familiar faces, including his dad, Ladd, his older brother Bryce, and a few cousins and friends. There were cowboy hats, baseball caps, big smiles, and very full plates. No notes!
And because one birthday meal apparently wasn’t enough, Ree also made Todd a very sensible, motherly birthday present: rolls of Oatmeal Crispies dough, wrapped in paper with little handwritten notes like “HBD” and “Love, Mom.”
“Birthday present for my youngest, currently in ziplocs in the freezer,” Ree wrote on Instagram. “Oatmeal Crispies are 100% his love language.”
The best part is that the dough can be frozen, then sliced and baked whenever you get a hankering for something your mama whipped up. Ree has said that’s exactly why she loves the recipe: It’s “ready to slice and bake whenever the cowboy in your life has a craving for something sweet.” (Though she admitted that sometimes Todd just eats the dough. 😂)
Pork chops, potatoes, corn and freezer cookie dough from your mom? That’s a pretty darn good way to turn 22!
