Christmas is coming early this year!
Netflix just announced its lineup of fall movies and tucked among all the new dramas, comedies, and holiday releases is one that immediately caught our attention: A Dog’s Perfect Christmas. The new Christmas movie arrives on Wednesday, November 4, and yes, the dog in question is a basset hound.
A Dog’s Perfect Christmas follows a family going through a difficult time as the holidays approach. According to Netflix, a teenager, her grandfather, and his trusty basset hound, Winstead, find themselves trying to hold the household together at Christmas. Dennis Quaid leads the movie alongside Mary Steenburgen and Milo Ventimiglia, with Jennifer Tilly also popping up in the cast. And Winstead gets a familiar voice of his own: Thomas Haden Church will bring the basset hound to life.
If Quaid’s name sounds familiar in a W. Bruce Cameron movie, there’s a reason. A Dog’s Perfect Christmas is based on Cameron’s 2020 novel of the same name, and Quaid previously starred in the movie adaptations of A Dog’s Purpose and A Dog’s Journey. But despite the similar title, this isn’t another chapter in that series—it’s actually a standalone story! In the book, the Goss family is already coming apart at the seams when a bigger crisis hits just before Christmas, and an unexpected puppy may be exactly what brings everyone back together.
And naturally, all of this has us thinking about Ree Drummond, whose love affair with basset hounds goes back much further than Charlie, Walter, Rusty, or Fred. “I’ve loved bassets all my life!” Ree has said, explaining that it was the very first dog she had as a three-year-old. Their floppy ears, droopy eyes, excess skin, and “hilarious personalities” still make her heart leap.
So when November 4 rolls around, we have a feeling Winstead will have at least one very enthusiastic viewer in Oklahoma. Maybe Ree can convince Ladd to make it a movie night! 😂
