Kayce Dutton has worn a lot of hats in the Yellowstone universe: rancher, soldier, husband, father, son, occasional vigilante, and now U.S. Marshal. Marshals puts him in a new job with a new badge, but it doesn’t exactly drop him into a totally new world. There are still long roads, hard choices, dangerous men, and the kind of trouble that seems to know the Dutton name before Kayce even introduces himself.
The series follows Luke Grimes’ character after he leaves the Yellowstone ranch behind and joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals. The show is set in Montana, which makes sense for Kayce, Tate, Thomas Rainwater, and the larger story fans have been following for years. But anyone watching Season 1 probably noticed that Marshals has a slightly different feel from the later Yellowstone seasons. The snowy roads, mountain towns, ranch country, and wide stretches of Western landscape all look believable for Kayce’s Montana life—but that doesn’t necessarily mean the cameras are rolling there.

Where Is ‘Marshals’ Filmed?
Marshals is set in Montana, but much of the show is actually filmed in Utah. According to the Deseret News, Season 1 filmed in and around Morgan, Summit, and Wasatch counties, with some filming also taking place in Montana.
That Utah connection is pretty familiar territory for longtime Yellowstone fans. Decider also reported that Marshals follows the path of Yellowstone’s early seasons, which were filmed in Utah before the flagship series later moved more of its production to Montana.
Where Is ‘Marshals’ Season 2 Filmed?
Season 2 is filming in Utah, too. Paramount+ confirmed that production on Marshals Season 2 began in June 2026 in Park City, Utah and the new season will continue filming in Salt Lake, Summit, and Wasatch counties, which are all in the northern part of the state and most closely resemble Montana.
There has been plenty of local activity around the production as well. Luke Grimes was spotted by ThePioneerWoman.com team in Park City as recently as July 3, so Kayce’s next chapter is very much being made in the mountains again. And local news outlet The Park Record reported that Season 2 is headquartered at Utah Film Studios in Park City, with Summit and Wasatch counties serving as key production hubs.
Why Utah Makes Sense for ‘Marshals’
For Marshals, Utah is a pretty natural fit. The show still needs to feel close to the Yellowstone world, but Kayce’s story is no longer centered on the ranch in the same way. Utah gives the series room to follow him into smaller towns, different roads, backcountry standoffs, and all the places a U.S. Marshal might end up when a case gets ugly.
Kayce may be chasing justice in Montana, but a lot of Marshals is really being brought to life in Utah. And for a show about a Dutton trying to move forward while the past keeps riding along with him, that familiar-but-not-quite-the-same backdrop is definitely working!
