Well, that was one way to end a season!
The Dutton Ranch Season 1 finale didn’t exactly send Beth Dutton, Rip Wheeler, and young Carter Green riding off into a peaceful Texas sunset. Instead, it gave fans a dead body, a kidnapping, a pregnancy reveal, and Beth Dutton delivering the sort of line that makes you sit up a little straighter on the couch. So yes, the good news is that Dutton Ranch has already been renewed for another season. The slightly less calming news is that we’ve got a lot to sort through before Beth and Rip can even think about unpacking another box.
The biggest question, of course, is what happens to Carter. In the finale, Mariano’s men kidnapped him from Dwight’s old ranch, then called Beth to make sure she and Rip knew exactly who had him. Rip told Beth that Mariano’s crew didn’t really want Carter—they wanted them. Beth’s answer? “Then they’re gonna f***ing get us.”
That pretty much sets the mood for Season 2, don’t you think?
Cole Hauser has already hinted that Carter’s kidnapping puts Beth and Rip “back on offense,” telling TV Insider that “everybody knows that it’s game on.” And anyone who knows anything about Rip and Beth knows they don’t play to lose.
But Carter isn’t the only loose end. (Spoilers ahead!) There’s also Rob-Will, who was shot and killed in the finale after an emotional moment with Oreana. The scene certainly points toward Joaquin, but Juan Pablo Raba told Entertainment Weekly that he’s not convinced his character pulled the trigger. So now we have to wonder: Did Joaquin really kill his brother or is there another twist coming?
Then there’s Oreana, who learned she was pregnant and still hadn’t told Carter by the time everything went sideways. That secret feels too big to stay buried for long, especially with Carter now in danger and Oreana caught between the Jackson mess and the Duttons.
And speaking of the Jackson mess, what happens to Beulah’s ranch now? The finale exposed the drug-smuggling operation tied to the cattle, Mariano is officially a threat, and Beth and Rip’s fresh start in Texas has already turned into a full-blown war.
Season 2 will also have a behind-the-scenes change, with Benjamin Cavell as the new showrunner. But story-wise, the path forward is pretty clear: find Carter, deal with Mariano, and see whether Beth and Rip can protect the family they’ve built without losing themselves in the process.
