Wait a second—is Rip Wheeler leaving Dutton Ranch?

Thankfully, no! Cole Hauser’s beloved Yellowstone character is not being replaced and Rip is very much still part of Beth Dutton’s new chapter down in Texas. But after a few headlines started making the rounds online, it’s easy to see why fans may have done a double-take.

The confusion seems to come from Rip’s changing role on the show. On Yellowstone, Rip was John Dutton’s right-hand man, ranch foreman, problem-solver, and the person everyone knew not to cross. He was so closely tied to the day-to-day life of the Dutton Ranch that the idea of someone else stepping into that space sounds pretty alarming at first.

But that’s not really what’s happening.

On Dutton Ranch, Rip’s responsibilities have shifted as he and Beth build a new life away from Montana. Because of that, some of the duties fans associate with Rip are being handled by other characters, including Azul, played by J.R. Villarreal, and Zachariah, played by Marc Menchaca. Azul is more connected to the ranch-hand side of things, while Zachariah has the harder edge you’d expect from someone operating in Taylor Sheridan’s world.

Still, taking on parts of Rip’s old job is not the same as replacing Rip Wheeler. Let’s be serious: Rip is Rip. He’s one of the reasons people followed this story from Yellowstone to Dutton Ranch in the first place!

There’s also another very obvious fans shouldn’t panic: Dutton Ranch has already been renewed for season 2! According to Paramount+, Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser will continue their roles at the center of the series as Beth and Rip. So no, Rip is not being written off or swapped out for a new version of himself.

His life may be changing, but Rip Wheeler isn’t goin’ anywhere!
