Dutton Ranch has plenty of questions still hanging in the air ahead of the Season 1 finale. What’s really going to happen with Beth and Rip in Texas? How much trouble is Beulah Jackson going to cause? Will anyone in this universe ever get one peaceful day? (Probably not, but we keep hoping!)

One question fans don’t have to wonder about anymore, though, involves Oreana and Carter.

Natalie Alyn Lind, who plays Oreana on the Yellowstone spinoff, has cleared up some confusion about her character’s age. Viewers have been trying to figure out how old Oreana is supposed to be, mostly because of her relationship with Carter, played by Finn Little. Carter is 19 and still in high school on the show, which made some fans think Oreana must be around the same age.

Not quite.

“Everybody keeps on making these references to the fact that they think my character is supposed to be a high school student,” Natalie told People. “A huge part of our storyline is that my character is supposed to be years older than Finn's. My character is supposed to be 24, and his character's supposed to be 19.”

So there’s the answer: Oreana is 24. Carter is 19. And yes, that age difference is part of the story.

That explanation actually makes their relationship a little easier to understand, not because it makes things less complicated, but because it makes the complication more intentional. Oreana isn’t being written as another high schooler drifting into Carter’s orbit. She’s older, more guarded, and carrying a very different kind of baggage. She’s also Beulah Jackson’s granddaughter, which means her connection to Carter was never going to be simple in the first place. Around here, falling for someone from the wrong ranch is practically asking for a storm cloud to pull up a chair!

Natalie also told People that Oreana’s difficult upbringing plays a big role in how she connects with Carter. In her view, Carter brings out a softer, more youthful side of Oreana—one she didn’t really get to have growing up.

That’s worth remembering as Dutton Ranch heads into its Season 1 finale on Friday, July 3, on Paramount+. The show has already been renewed for Season 2, so there’s room for more of Oreana’s story to unfold. And now that this question is settled, fans can focus on the bigger worry: what Beth, Rip, Carter, and everyone else are walking into next.
