As a mother cooking for hungry kids in the house, a rancher husband and his crew of cowboys, Ree Drummond has always had a well-stocked fridge. (Feeding all those folks, it's a must!) But what happens when the kids fly the coop? And the cowboys are out with the herds in open pastures?
The fridge ends up looking, well, a little different these days.
In a spur-of-the-moment update, Ree shared a "random glimpse" at the contents inside her fridge—and it paints a good picture of life at home when it's just herself and husband Ladd.
Every shelf tells its own story. Things are especially “heavy on the fruit right now,” Ree explained in her caption, due to Lent, but even something as innocuous as apples comes with a little household divide. Ree is firmly loyal to Honeycrisp because she “can’t do tart,” while Ladd will only eat Granny Smith. As for eggs, there are plenty on hand because the couple apparently has two very different boiling preferences: hard-boiled for Ladd, soft-boiled for Ree. (Hey, why not? Easter is coming up!) Then, there’s the baking. Ree says she’s been making oatmeal cookies “basically constantly,” which certainly helps explain why so many staples are stocked and ready to go.
Some of the other highlights in the fridge include leftover Marlboro Man sandwich meat, which Ree insists is even better the next day, plus several different kinds of beef (including, as she points out, one slightly questionable package of ground beef).
A few items are clearly claimed territory: The tub of pickles belongs to Ree. The Pillsbury orange rolls and English muffins are all Ladd. And the heavy cream? Ree made it very clear that one is hers—enthusiastically so.
Still, despite their different tastes, Ree and Ladd do find common ground in one fresh staple: tomatoes for pico de gallo. As Ree put it, that’s where they “finally come together as one.”
The most iconic detail of all has to be the drawers: one is full of butter and the other is full of cheese. (Did you expect anything less from P-Dub? She’s always kept the good stuff in easy reach.)
It’s a small snapshot of life as empty-nesters, but that’s exactly what makes it such a fun thing to share! A drawer full of butter is always worth talking about.
