What do you call a cold and fizzy drink when you need one right this very second?
A soda? A pop? A Coke? A Dr Pepper that everyone is politely pretending belongs in one of those categories?
This very important matter came up in the latest episode of “Drummond Ranch,” the YouTube series that gives everyone a closer look at life on the ranch, from the cattle work to the family dynamics to the little everyday moments that somehow wind up being the funniest ones. In a preview from the new episode, Ladd Drummond is driving the pickup and hauling equipment, which he calls the “easy job.” But he has a very specific reason for that.
“If you’ve got an ice chest, you can have a pop and relax,” he says.
Then, because timing is everything when ranch work is involved, Ladd heads over to his truck and opens the cooler. “Might be time to get a pop,” he says. “You gotta drink one when you get the chance.”
Now, anyone who looks closely can see that Ladd’s “pop” is actually a Dr Pepper, but that only made the conversation funnier. The Drummond Ranch Instagram account asked the real question in the caption: What do YOU call it?
Naturally, people had thoughts!
One commenter said, “I am from Ohio and it is pop,” adding that if you want a particular kind, you call it by name. Another person went full Southern and wrote, “Every soft drink is Coke! What kind of Coke do ya want? Dr. Pepper, ok!” Someone else took a firmer stance: “When I say I want a Coke, it means give me a Coca Cola and no, Pepsi is not OK.”
So there you have it. The ranch may have cattle, cowboys, ice chests, and pickups, but it also has one of the oldest debates in America tucked right inside the cooler.
Whatever you call it, Ladd’s rule still stands: You drink one when you get the chance!
