Some lessons are just easier to learn the hard way!
Alex Drummond proved this recently when she shared a couple of photos of her daughter sitting out in the backyard, happily minding her business in a pink onesie…with a little twig in hand. Except she wasn’t just holding it. She was eating it. As one does.
Alex summed the scene up perfectly with her caption: “I’ve learned that sometimes I just gotta let her taste test the elements to prove to herself that she doesn’t actually want to eat them.” And honestly, there’s a lot of wisdom in that. You can see it all play out on Sofia’s face, too. There’s that brief moment of curiosity, followed very quickly by a look that says, “Okay, never mind.” (Not unlike the moment she tried eggs for the first time!)
It’s funny because this is such a specific little phase. Everything is new, everything is worth investigating, and apparently, everything deserves at least one bite just to be sure. The backyard basically becomes a full menu, from grass to twigs to who knows what else she’s considered along the way.
In one of the photos, Sofia is sitting right in the middle of the yard with the most serious expression, like she’s fully committed to the experiment. In another, she’s clearly processing the results—and the results are not great. 😂
Alex’s approach here sounds very familiar, probably because it’s not all that different from how she was raised on the ranch. As long as your baby is safe, sometimes you just let it play out. After all, have you ever tried explaining the finer points of backyard foliage to a one-year-old? It’s a much faster process to let them take one bite and come to their own conclusion.
Of course, knowing Sofia, this probably won’t be the last “taste test.” There are still plenty of backyard discoveries waiting for her. But at least for now, it seems safe to say twigs won’t be making a repeat appearance on the menu anytime soon!
