Ree Drummond and her granddaughter, Sofia, share a relationship so special that it basically transcends words! While there’s no question that Sofia absolutely adores her grandmother, she may or may not call Ree the wrong name. 😂
When Sofia was born, Ree took on the grandma name, “Ree Ree,” which is the sweet nickname that her own mom, Gerre, calls her. Initially, of course, there wasn’t any pushback—but now that Sofia is getting older and learning how to sound out her syllables, she’s having trouble wrapping her head around the correct articulation of “Ree Ree.” “Sofia pronounces ‘Ree Ree’ as ‘Yaya,’ and it’s the funniest thing 😂😂,” Sofia’s mom, Alex Drummond, recently revealed on Instagram.
Even though everyone in the Drummond family refers to Ree as “Ree Ree” in front of Sofia, the one-year-old can’t seem to grasp the concept. “My mom’s grandma name is ‘Ree Ree,’ and for some reason, it’s in Sofia’s brain that ReeRee equals Yaya—that’s how she says it,” Alex shared in the Instagram story. “We’ll be like, ‘Sofia, can you say Ree Ree?’ And she’ll be like, ‘Yaya.’”
Since saying “ReeRee” doesn’t roll off the tongue for Sofia, that begs the question: Will Ree change her grandma name before her second grandchild is born? If it were fully up to Ree, probably not. “So now, we’re joking that my mom’s grandma name is going to be Yaya, but she objects to that—she prefers ReeRee—but we think it’s so funny,” Alex continued in her video.
One thing’s for sure: The name “Papa” is here to stay! Papa is the name that Sofia calls her grandpa (Ree’s husband, Ladd), and according to Alex, Sofia’s pronunciation is nearly perfect. “She says ‘Papa’ really well, though,” Alex added.
Thankfully, there aren’t any hard feelings on Ree’s end. (And how could there be?!) The name barrier certainly didn’t stop Ree from having the best time with Sofia at the ranch this past weekend. “She had a really fun day today hanging out with Ree Ree and Papa,” Alex said of Sofia’s playdate with Ree on Friday. Sofia just needs a little more time, and she’ll be pronouncing “Ree Ree” like a pro!
