Mama knows best—especially when balloons are involved!
Alex Drummond is about a year and a half into life as a mom (with baby number two on the way), so she’s already learned that parenting comes with a lot of decisions. Big ones, little ones, and the surprisingly emotional ones that somehow involve cake, decorations, and whether or not to invite half the town to a first birthday party. 😂
Ahead of Sofia’s first birthday last December, Alex shared that she and Mauricio had decided to keep things simple. “We decided not to do a big party!!” she said at the time, explaining that they would still celebrate with family, cake, and decorations—just not a huge birthday bash. Now, months later, Alex is standing by that choice.
During a recent “quick Q&A from bed” on her Instagram stories, someone asked, “Are you happy you didn’t do a huge party for Sofia’s 1st bday?”
Her answer was very clear: “Honestly zero regrets!!!!”
And the photo she shared explains why! Sofia looked perfectly happy sitting in her birthday hat, surrounded by colorful balloons, which is honestly a pretty great party when you‘re one year old and your main hobbies include crawling, clapping, and being adorable.
“We still made it so fun and special and it was less stress on our end,” Alex wrote. “Plus she doesn’t love a crowd!”
That last part might be the most important detail of all. The birthday girl had a sweet celebration, her family got to enjoy it, and nobody had to force a big production just because it felt like the thing to do. These days, when social media can make every milestone feel like it needs a theme, a balloon arch, a custom backdrop, and possibly a fog machine, Alex’s smaller approach feels very refreshing.
“I’m sure her years of big parties will come 😂😂,” Alex added. And they probably will! But for Sofia’s first birthday, small and sweet seemed to be exactly right.
