Mauricio Scott is feeling like himself again—which is a very welcome update after a not-so-fun start to the summer!
Alex Drummond recently checked in on Instagram Stories after receiving “so many Q’s” about how her husband has been doing since his Alpha-Gal syndrome diagnosis. Mauricio first began experiencing terrible burning stomach pain after eating a burger, steak tacos, and brisket a couple months ago. Bloodwork later confirmed the tick-related allergy and Alex said his levels were “super high.”
Thankfully, avoiding red meat has made a big difference.
“Wasn’t trying to leave you guys hanging just haven’t had much to update on TBH because his symptoms are nonexistent as long as he stays away from red meat,” Alex wrote. “So he’s been feeling totally normal haha just missing eating meat 🥩.”
That last part is not especially surprising. Mauricio has always loved burgers, steaks, ribs, and brisket, so the adjustment has required a little creativity in the kitchen! Alex and Mauricio have already shared some of their newer favorites, including turkey tacos and colorful salmon bowls, and he has continued to tolerate chicken, fish, and dairy.
Alex also shared what they’re trying next. “BUT exciting update we got him in for acupuncture treatment next week!!!!” she wrote. The appointment will be with a practitioner in Tulsa who, Alex said, has “an amazing track record for curing alpha gal.”
“So will keep you updated how that goes!” she added. “I’m hopeful we can cure it!”
For context, the CDC currently recommends managing Alpha-Gal by avoiding foods and products that trigger reactions and preventing additional tick bites; it does not list acupuncture as an established cure, though there’s been limited research. One retrospective study of an auricular acupuncture technique reported promising patient outcomes, but the researchers said more controlled trials and laboratory testing are needed.
For now, the simplest update is also the best one: Mauricio feels normal, his symptoms are manageable, and Alex will share more after his appointment!
